I started studying the square shape since 2008 to become aware of the surface in painting, initially by providing the work ‘Golden Square (Scale Proportions)‘.
I thought of the sheet and the white canvas. On which basis do we choose the proportions of a work? Why do we usually prefer a quadrangular shape?
The square is a shape which stays at the very heart of our civilization, being so useful and practical.
It is the place where we store our memories, where dwell certainties, references and information.
In the charts of ancient cities and in the foundations of the pyramids, the square taken as a perimeter tends to dominate the surface.
Paintings, books, photographs, TV screens and pixel all start from the square. The square theme allows to visualise space, the area where the image is placed, transforming the background itself into a pictorial subject.
My paintings are a simplified reality and a development of it at the same time.
